Society golf packages explained: breakfast, 18 holes and a meal from £58 a head

What a society day at The Hertsmere includes, how the pricing works from £58 per person for groups of 12 or more, and how to plan a day your group will want to repeat.

A society day at The Hertsmere starts from £58 per person for groups of 12 or more, and a typical package runs breakfast on arrival, 18 holes on our Donald Steel parkland course, and a meal in Script Restaurant and Bar afterwards. This guide explains what that actually looks like on the day, what is worth adding, and how to get your date in the diary.

Organising a society day should not feel like a second job. The organiser wants a straightforward price per head, food that arrives on time, a course the group will talk about on the drive home, and no awkward surprises on the bill. That is exactly what our packages are built around, and because we are in Elstree, inside the M25 and around 20 minutes from London, your group does not lose half the day to travel.

What a society day at The Hertsmere includes

Our society packages start from £58 per person for groups of 12 or more, and £48 a head for returning societies. The classic format is the one in the title: breakfast when you arrive, 18 holes, and a meal together afterwards. Script Restaurant and Bar handles the food at both ends of the day. It opens at 7:30am seven days a week, so an early tee time still means a hot breakfast rather than a wrapped pastry in the pro shop.

In between, you play the full 18 holes of our Donald Steel parkland course, which opened in 1986. It is a par 72 measuring 6,376 yards off the whites and 6,053 off the yellows, with the red tees playing 5,464 yards as a par 75, so there is a sensible option for every standard of golfer in your group. Steel's design rewards thought rather than brute force, which tends to keep society scoring competitive right down the prize list.

How the day usually runs

Most societies follow a similar rhythm, and it works because nobody is rushed. Here is the shape of a typical day with us:

  • Arrive and park, with over 250 free spaces, so nobody circles the lanes of Elstree looking for a spot
  • Breakfast in Script from 7:30am onwards, with tea and coffee flowing while the organiser sorts the draw
  • Optional warm-up on our 26-bay floodlit Toptracer range before you head to the first tee
  • 18 holes on the Donald Steel parkland course, playing off whatever tees suit your group
  • A meal back in Script (ham, egg and chips and a dessert on the midweek package), with the balcony overlooking the course if the weather plays along, followed by the prize-giving

If your society likes a Nearest-the-Pin or Longest-Drive competition, tell us when you book and we will make sure the markers are out. And if some of your group want to stay on the range until late, Toptracer keeps the bays lit until 10pm.

Why the food matters more than people admit

Ask any society organiser what gets remembered, and the winner's score rarely comes up. The hot bacon does, and so does a meal that felt like an occasion. Script gives the day a strong start and finish, with a balcony over the course for summer evenings and a Sunday roast if your society plays weekends. It is dog friendly too, so if a member of the group brings a well-behaved spectator, they are welcome.

Ready to book your society day?

Tell us your group size and preferred dates, and we will put together a package from £58 per person for 12 or more players. Popular spring and summer dates go early, so it pays to enquire ahead.

A few tips from the societies who come back

Book early for peak months, because the best mornings fill up first. Give us accurate numbers a week or so out, as the £58 rate is built around groups of 12 or more and the kitchen plans around your headcount. Collect money from your group before the day, which every organiser learns eventually. And mix the format up between rounds, since a Texas scramble or pairs betterball keeps the higher handicappers involved and the banter healthy.

One more thing worth knowing. If your society members enjoy the course and want to come back on their own terms, our Flexi membership starts from £300 a year for 120 points, with no joining fee, an England Golf handicap, a 14-day booking window, and 10 per cent off in Script. Plenty of our Flexi members first saw the course on a society day.

Golf without the gatekeeping is the whole point here. No committee interviews, no dress-code anxiety, just a well-kept Donald Steel course, good food, and a day your group will want to put in the diary again next year.

The £58 per person rate applies to groups of 12 or more. If your group is smaller, get in touch anyway, as we can still put a day together for you, or you can book tee times individually with the best rates available online.
