A 26-bay Toptracer driving range in Elstree

The Hertsmere has a 26-bay Toptracer driving range at Elstree, near Borehamwood, just inside the M25 and twenty minutes from north London, lit and open until 10pm (9pm on Sunday to Tuesday from December to February). Every bay reads your ball flight and puts it on the screen, so the bucket you used to hit and forget now tells you something. Come after work, or bring the family at the weekend. There is no membership to buy, no standard to meet and no need to book: turn up and take any free bay.

The technology

Every shot tracked on screen,
with Toptracer.

Toptracer is the same ball-tracing you watch on the telly during the big tournaments. A camera catches every shot and the screen in your bay shows the carry, the total and the shape of it the second the ball lands. So the slice you have spent years guessing about is suddenly there in numbers, and you can do something about it.Some nights you will want to put your head down and work. Other nights you will want a beer and a laugh with three mates. The range takes both. Order food and drink from Script straight to your bay. Grab a basket from reception or the tap-and-go machine, pick a bay and start hitting. There is nothing to book and no one to sign up with.

On the screen

A bucket of balls that fights back

The same screen that tracks your swing also runs games. So a quiet practice session and a noisy night out happen in the same bay.

The setup

Covered bays, floodlit,
open until 10pm.

The range is right beside the main building, with more than 250 free spaces on site. Park, walk thirty seconds, start hitting. The bays are covered, so the rain stays off you and the floodlights keep you going long after the course has gone dark. You do not have to be a member and you do not have to be a golfer. First-timers and single-figure handicaps hit side by side most nights. When you have warmed up, there are two practice putting greens for sorting out the part of the game that actually decides your score.

Where the short game gets sorted

The range grooves the long stuff. The two putting greens by the main building are where you sort the part of the game that actually decides your score, and both are free to use.

Srixon custom fitting

The right clubs for your swing.

Most golfers play clubs that were never built for them. A PGA professional measures your swing on the GCQuad launch monitor in the fitting studio here on the range, then matches the shaft, the loft, and the lie to what it actually does. You walk out with gear that fits, not gear off a shelf. Fitting from £25.
