When is the cheapest time to play golf at The Hertsmere?

Midweek tee times booked online are the cheapest way to play The Hertsmere. Here is how green fees work at our Elstree course, and how to get the best rate every time.

Updated

The cheapest time to play The Hertsmere is midweek, outside the busiest morning slots, and always booked online, because that is where our best rates live. We are a pay-and-play club, so there is no membership requirement and no secret handshake. You pick your day, pick your time, and pay for the golf you actually play. Below, we explain how green fees work here, when demand (and price) tends to dip, and a few ways regular visitors quietly pay less per round than everyone else.

How green fees work at The Hertsmere

The Hertsmere is a pay-and-play course, which means anyone can book a tee time without joining, being signed in, or knowing a member. Our 18-hole Donald Steel parkland layout has been here since 1986, plays to a par 72, and stretches to 6,376 yards off the whites, so you are getting a full test of golf for your money rather than a cut-down course. Like most clubs, our green fees move with demand. Weekends and prime weekday mornings are the busiest windows, so they carry the highest rates, while quieter periods cost less. The one rule that never changes: our best rates are always online, so booking through the website beats turning up and paying on the day.

Midweek is where the value is

If you have any flexibility at all, play Monday to Thursday. Midweek demand is lower, which means lower prices, a wider choice of tee times, and a course that flows beautifully. You will often have the fairways of our Elstree parkland close to yourself, which is a strange luxury for a course 20 minutes from London and inside the M25. Later starts on weekdays tend to be the quietest of all, so if your schedule allows an afternoon round, that is usually the sweet spot for price and pace of play combined. And with over 250 free parking spaces, you will never pay a penny more than the green fee itself.

Five habits of golfers who pay less here

  • Book online every time, because the website always carries our best rates.

  • Play midweek rather than at the weekend, when demand and prices peak.

  • Look at afternoon and later tee times, which are typically the quietest slots.

  • Stay flexible on your start time and let the cheapest available slot choose you.

  • Bring a group of 12 or more as a society, with packages from £58 per person.

Playing regularly? Flexi membership beats green fees

If you find yourself booking more than a handful of rounds a year, our Flexi membership is worth a look. From £300 a year you get 120 points to spend on golf, with no joining fee, an England Golf handicap, a 14-day booking window, and 10 per cent off food and drink at Script Restaurant and Bar. Because points go further at quieter times, Flexi members who play midweek stretch their allowance a long way. It is the same golf, the same course, and the same clubhouse, just at a lower cost per round for people who play often. There is no gatekeeping here, and Flexi is simply the fairest way we know to reward regulars.

Make a cheap round feel like a full day out

A lower green fee does not mean a lesser experience. Arrive early and warm up on our 26-bay floodlit Toptracer range, which stays open until 10pm, so an evening round can even finish under the lights with a bucket of balls. Afterwards, Script Restaurant and Bar serves Modern British food seven days a week from 7:30am, with a balcony overlooking the course, a Sunday roast, and a warm welcome for dogs. Time it right and a midweek round with breakfast before and lunch after still costs less than a peak weekend tee time elsewhere. That is the whole idea: great golf, 20 minutes from London, without the price tag or the pretence.
