What to expect on your first visit to a pay-and-play golf course

Visiting a pay-and-play golf course for the first time? Here is exactly what happens, from booking online to the first tee, at The Hertsmere in Elstree.

Expect a warm welcome, no membership questions, and a simple routine: book your tee time online, arrive around 30 minutes early, check in, warm up, and play. That is the whole idea of pay-and-play golf, and it is exactly how things work at The Hertsmere. There is no committee to impress and no dress-code interrogation at the door, just golf without the gatekeeping. Here is what your first visit actually looks like, step by step.

Before you arrive: book online and save

Pay-and-play means exactly what it says. You pay for the round you want to play, when you want to play it, with no joining fee and no annual commitment. At The Hertsmere the best rates are always online, so it is worth booking your tee time in advance rather than turning up on spec. Booking ahead also guarantees your slot, which matters at weekends when the course is at its busiest.

You do not need a handicap, a letter of introduction, or any prior experience of the club. If you can book a table at a restaurant, you can book a round of golf here.

Arriving: parking, check-in, and finding your way

Give yourself around 30 minutes before your tee time. The Hertsmere sits in Elstree (WD6 3AA), inside the M25 and about 20 minutes from London, with over 250 free parking spaces, so the journey and the arrival are as painless as golf gets. Head to reception, give your name, and you are checked in. That is it.

If you are unsure about anything, ask. The team is used to first-time visitors and nobody will make you feel like you have wandered into a private members' lounge by mistake. On dress, keep it simple: smart, comfortable sportswear and golf shoes or trainers with grip will not raise an eyebrow.

Warming up before your round

One of the perks of playing here is the 26-bay floodlit Toptracer range, open until 10pm. Hitting a small bucket of balls before you head to the first tee settles the nerves and gives you instant feedback on every shot, because Toptracer tracks ball flight, carry, and distance on a screen in your bay. Ten minutes of putting near the clubhouse and you are ready.

What the course itself is like

The course is an 18-hole parkland layout designed by Donald Steel and opened in 1986. It plays as a par 72 at 6,376 yards from the white tees and 6,053 yards from the yellows, with the red tees at 5,464 yards playing as a par 75. In plain terms: it is a full-length course, and a fair one, with generous parkland fairways rather than punishing carries. First-timers usually find the yellows or reds the most enjoyable place to start.

A few unwritten rules keep everyone happy on any pay-and-play course:

  • Keep pace with the group in front rather than racing the group behind
  • Repair your pitch marks and rake bunkers as you go
  • Wave faster groups through if you fall a hole behind
  • Stay quiet and still while others are hitting
  • Most importantly, relax; everyone was a first-timer once

After the round: eat, drink, and plan the next one

The 19th hole matters here. Script Restaurant and Bar serves Modern British food seven days a week from 7:30am, with a balcony looking out over the course, a Sunday roast worth planning a round around, and a dog-friendly welcome if you have brought a four-legged spectator. A post-round debrief over lunch is half the point of the game.

If the first visit goes well, you have options. Groups of 12 or more can book a society day from £58 per person, and if you think you will be back regularly, Flexi membership starts from £300 a year for 120 points, with no joining fee, an England Golf handicap, a 14-day booking window, and 10 per cent off at Script. Or simply keep paying and playing. That is allowed too. It is rather the whole point.
